Ethics & Copyright

What is copyright?

Is a federal law that protects any work created by you or anyone else from being copied, used or changed with out you consent.  To avoid the copyright issue simply write or email the person who created the work and ask for permission to use it.

They are three elements for copyright:

Creativity, Originality and Fixation

Copyright protection does not last forever. When protection expires, the work enters the public domain. The laws governing how long copyright lasts; therefore, determining copyright status can be difficult.

There some categories that Copyright does not extend in which you don’t have to ask for permission to use them. I will mention some of them:

  1. Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship (for example, standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources).
  2. Works federal government employees produced within the scope of their employment.
  3. Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents.

What is fair use?

Is the right to use someone else work for various purposes as criticism, comment, new reporting, teaching or research.

If a work doesn’t have a copyright notice on it, is it public domain?

Copyright notices have been optional since 1989, so if you find a work that was created after that year it is protected by copyright with or without notice unless has given up his or her rights. If it was created before and it doesn’t have a copyright notice on it, it may or may not be protected.

What is considered public domain?

Is the right to use material, devices, and skills free of charge.

Are the videos in You Tube in the public domain?

No, people seem to think that because public can access these videos for free they are not protected; you retain a copyright in your video when you post it to You Tube.

File Compression

What is file compression and how it works?

File Compression is a process that allows you to shrink files. It works by finding patterns in the data then replacing these patterns with special smaller patterns. It is important to realize that it is impossible to compress a file without losing data.

File Compression for Mac Users simple steps:

  1. Launch on Mac OS X’s by clicking the finder icon
  2. Find the files you want to compress. If you want more than one file just hold down the command key and select each file.
  3. Right or Control Click the files you want to compress.
  4. Select Compress X from the menu that pops up. If you are compressing 3 files, it will say “Compress 3 items.” A box will appear showing the status and expected time it will take to complete. It may take several times if you are compressing a lot of files.
  5. Click on Archive zip. Names all created zip files as archive. If you have created more than one in the same folder they will name sequentially: Archive 2.zip, Archive 3.zip etc.
  6. Hit enter the word “Archive” will be highlight and make it editable
  7. Name the file; make it descriptive so it will be easy to remember later. Hit enter and you are done
  8. Double click the file you created to unzip the archive. Mac OS X will create a new folder with the name of the Archive filled with the files that were originally compressed.

 Advantages of a file Compression:

    • Storage space
    • Electricity – if you save on storage, you save on cooling
    • Viewing – files can be open while they are being downloaded
    • Printing – you can print 1-100 times faster
    • Transmission time – downloading takes 1/10th of normal time

What is PHP?

PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, PHP is a sever-side scripting  language

Describe briefly the history of PHP.

PHP was conceived sometime in the fall of 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf. The first version used by others was available sometime in early 1995 and was known as the Personal Home Page Tools. It consisted of a very simplistic parser engine that only understood a few special macros and a number of utilities that were in common use on home pages back then. A guestbook, a counter and some other stuff It is difficult to give any hard statistics, but it is estimated that by late 1996 PHP/FI was in use on at least 15,000 web sites around the world. By mid-1997 this number had grown to over 50,000. Mid-1997 also saw a change in the development of PHP. It changed from being Rasmus’ own pet project that a handful of people had contributed to, to being a much more organized team effort. The parser was rewritten from scratch by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans and this new parser formed the basis for PHP Version 3.Describe general usage of PHP like server-side scripting, command-      line scripting, and client-side GUI applications.

PHP can do anything any other CGI program can do, such as collect form data, generate dynamic page content, or send and receive cookies.

The most significant feature in PHP is its support for a wide range of databases. Writing a database-enabled web page is simple. The following databases are currently supported:

Adabas D InterBase Solid
dBase mSQL Sybase
Empress MySQL Velocis
FilePro Oracle Unix dbm
Informix PostgreSQL

PHP also has support for talking to other services using protocols such as IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or even HTTP. You can also open raw network sockets and interact using other protocols.

Explain basic PHP syntax.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”&gt;

<html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml&#8221; xml:lang=”en” lang=”en”>

<title>Page Title </title>

echo “You will see this when you run the script”;

<h2>Then you can just add html where you want it</h2>

echo “now you can go back into php if you want to.”;

From the example above that you must start all of your PHP code with

and it is ended with

Explain how PHP can be applied to a website

PHP can be used in all major operating systems, including Linux, many Unix variants (including HP-UX, Solaris and OpenBSD), Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, RISC OS, and probably others. PHP has also support for most of the web servers today. This includes Apache, IIS, and many others. And this includes any web server that can utilize the FastCGI PHP binary, like lighttpd and nginx. PHP works as either a module, or as a CGI processor.

So with PHP, you have the freedom of choosing an operating system and a web server. Furthermore, you also have the choice of using procedural programming or object oriented programming (OOP), or a mixture of them both.

With PHP you are not limited to output HTML. PHP’s abilities includes outputting images, PDF files and even Flash movies (using libswf and Ming) generated on the fly. You can also output easily any text, such as XHTML and any other XML file. PHP can auto generate these files, and save them in the file system, instead of printing it out, forming a server-side cache for your dynamic content.
